What is Privilege Escalation?

Privilege escalation is the act of exploiting a vulnerability or misconfiguration to gain higher access rights than originally granted. Vertical privilege escalation involves moving from a low-privilege account to an administrator or root account, while horizontal escalation involves accessing another user's resources at the same privilege level. Penetration testers routinely test for privilege escalation paths as they represent a critical step in most real-world attacks.
